ABOUT

VISION

A world of curious, critical thinkers where everyone feels comfortable to discuss ideas, listen to each other, and re-evaluate their positions based on facts over opinions.

Science literacy and critical thinking are not only important to scientists, but they are also fundamental for advancements in education, community engagement, and social transformation. They empower people to understand different points of view and take responsible actions based on scientific, economic, cultural, historical, and ethical considerations. This mindset makes professionals better in their fields; parents better in raising their family; community members better in engaging with each other.

The Science Yourself initiative fosters creative, transformative learning experiences that challenge the way we think and the way we exercise rights and responsibilities in our community.

The Science Yourself initiative stimulates critical thinking in kids and adults as a way to become more independent and less vulnerable to false, misleading narratives.

We promote the voices of local leaders that value factual information as the fundamental base to make decisions and overcome challenges.

We connect researchers, educators, students, caregivers, and community members across Connecticut through opportunities to share experiences, learn from each other, and provide mutual support.

Gustavo Requena Santos

FOUNDER, RESEARCHER & SCIENCE EDUCATOR

Gustavo grew up in the city of Sorocaba (Southeastern Brazil), inspired by nature on his grandparents’ farm. This passion motivated him to become a biologist and led him to a career path in academic research and education. Gustavo dedicated years to help college students connect their curiosity about nature to science and guiding them through the transformative path of critical thinking. Such transformation, however, should not be restricted to colleges, but accessible to everyone.

In 2018, Gustavo chose Connecticut to be his new home, and non-formal science education and outreach to be his new career. He became a Board member of the CT Outdoor & Environmental Education Association and has been supporting and advocating for outdoor education as the perfect format to stimulate kids’ and adults’ curiosity about nature and connect them to science.

In 2020, Gustavo joined the Neighborhood Leadership Program from the Community Foundation for the Greater New Haven. Inspired by the stories and actions of so many community leaders, Gustavo decided to found the Science Yourself initiative as a way to celebrate, connect, and support science-based movements and programs in the Greater New Haven area and across Connecticut.
